What is root canal treatment (endodontics)?
Endodontics is also known as root canal treatment. It is a
form of treatment applied in cases where the pulp is damaged so that it cannot
repair itself. The pulp is a soft layer consisting of the vascular nerve
package in the innermost part of the tooth. Generally, bacteria from broken
teeth or deep caries cause inflammation of the pulp. If the inflamed or damaged
pulp is not removed, it causes infection in the tooth and surrounding tissues
and the tooth is lost.
Why is root canal treatment necessary?
Our teeth are a living organ. In the inner part of the
enamel layer that we see protecting the tooth, there is a vascular-nerve
network called "pulp". This living tissue of the tooth can be
irreversibly damaged due to caries, trauma, and gum diseases. In this case,
severe pain and inflammatory reactions are seen in the tooth.
Root canal treatment is the treatment to relieve this pain
and ensure that the tooth functions properly again. Tooth Extraction is also a
treatment option, but just as we think about the treatment first when an organ
is injured, we should consider its treatment, just as our doctor recommends it
for our teeth. Because just like caries, tooth loss is a disease. If not
removed, the balance of an entire mouth is lost. A successful root canal
treatment is an easier, shorter and more accurate way to eliminate a tooth
loss, both financially and morally.
How make is root treatment ?
- The first stage begins with the anesthesia applied to the tooth so that the treatment is painless.
- Then the caries is cleaned and the inflamed pulp is removed. All nerve and tissue residues in the root canal are cleaned.
- The canals are expanded up to the root tip and canal irrigation is done with appropriate solutions.
- If it is a root canal treatment that will last more than one session, the healing is accelerated by placing appropriate drugs in the canals and a temporary filling is placed on the tooth between sessions.
- When the healing is assured, the canals are filled with a special filling material up to the root tip.
